ANT Telecom supplies high-performance radio
communication systems for Docklands Light Railway
• contract covers provision of 24 advanced
µP-controlled two-way radios for new DLR trains
ANT Telecommunications has delivered 24 new train-borne radio communication
systems for the Docklands Light Railway, under the terms of a contract
that the company recently won from DLR Ltd. The radio systems will
be installed in new rolling stock that is being introduced to accommodate
increased passenger numbers, following significant expansion of
the DLR network in east London and south of the Thames.
Although the trains that run on the DLR network are controlled by
an automatic system and do not require drivers, each train is staffed
by a Passenger Service Agent, who oversees safety and assists any
passengers requiring help. The new high-performance radio systems
enable communication between the Passenger Service Agents, and with
the DLR control centre in Poplar whenever necessary, such as to
request external assistance. The radios supplied by ANT Telecom
are advanced microprocessor-controlled duplex units that provide
clear, high quality communications, and are designed to integrate
seamlessly into DLR's existing communications infrastructure.
ANT Telecommunications won this latest contract
to supply two-way radio systems for the new DLR trains primarily
on the strength of the company's track record in providing turnkey
communications solutions. According to Michael Freeman, Project
Manager for New Rail Cars with DLR Ltd, "Bosch Telecom UK previously
supplied a number of communications systems for the DLR, which were
delivered on-time and on-budget and have continued to work very
satisfactorily. Following the MBO of this company to form ANT Telecom,
it was an obvious contender for the contract to supply the radio
systems for our new rolling stock."
